The Waving Girl of Savannah
We took one of the ubiquitous trolley tours around Savannah, which stopped at the statue of the Waving Girl, Florence Martus and her dog Wolf. The story goes that she met a sailor, fell in love and told him she would wave at every ship until he came back to port. She waved faithfully to every ship entering and leaving the busy port... for 44 years until she was said to die of a broken heart. "They don't make women like Florence anymore," bemoaned our tour guide Denise. "But if you young girls remember anything from this tour, it's this: They still make men like that sailor." That got a good laugh.
