The Namesake

Filmmaker Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) takes the story of an Indian American family and paints a wonderful, insightful portrait of the cultural gap between immigrant parents and their Americanized children.

I picked up Jhumpa Lahiri's novel, the inspiration for the film, but was never able to get very far. The movie, though, pulls you in right from the start. It is a universal story that tugs at your heartstrings but rings true about the meaning of family.
